This tutorial for the new generation of software creators, who will develop systems at this exciting stage of progress, leveraging AI and cloud technologies to build services that customers are willing to pay for.

The tutorial is organized into four comprehensive modules.

We begin by exploring the essence of modern software applications: clean, modular designs deployed on scalable, resilient infrastructure. Frameworks, languages, and libraries are simply interchangeable tools; what matters is designing software that evolves with the business. Software is alive—give it a solid structure, guide its growth, and let it thrive.

Next, we dive into one particular toolset and architecture: .NET 8, C#, and modular monoliths, enriched with elements of Domain-Driven Design (DDD). This is the foundation I've used — and witnessed being used — to build numerous production systems in recent years.

My stance on testing may be unpopular: I dislike unit tests but view neglecting integration tests as nearly criminal. The goal is not just to get software into production, but to ensure it works well once it's there. Testing in production is a powerful approach, and this tutorial will present practical methods to implement it effectively.

Lastly, we’ll focus on code quality. The key to a robust production system lies in deep domain analysis and translating the business language faithfully into code. C#, in particular, offers robust features for this. While AI is often spotlighted as the future of software, it’s still just software.

The core principles of software development, much like mathematics, have remained unchanged since the 1970s—and they will continue to underpin everything we build.

In 2019, shortly after presenting at a community event in Helsinki I suffered a major life event in the form of a heart attack. This resulted in me having major heart surgery and taking 3 months out before I returned to the workforce and the community.

Securing access to content and applications is more important than ever with the Copilot making it easier than ever for content to be exposed to employees.

In this session, we will assess who has access to what and which tools are most appropriate for managing the permissions granting access to the content and applications.

Beyond credentials: leveraging biometrics to create a strong(er) bond between identity and user

For the last few years, we've spent between 20-30% of our time simply searching for information to get our work done (McKinsey, IDC). This treasure hunt has typically involved navigating and searching SharePoint to find the relevant documents or pages, opening several, then parsing the information to find what we need. Fortunately we now have many ways generative AI can provide immediate answers from our content, without the search/sort/sift - and most organisations are busy improving the employee experience with some form of this.

From all the gen AI and Copilot options, perhaps the most overlooked - and also the most embedded and SharePoint native option - is the idea of creating a Copilot agent in SharePoint. Instead of combing through content, employees can simply ask questions and the agent will use the site content to provide simple answers. But with every single SharePoint site in your tenant getting a ready to use Copilot agent enabled, quite a few governance and experience questions are raised. 

In this session we'll show real-world Copilot agents in action, exploring the limits of what's possible and demonstrating how agent behaviour and data can be tailored in Copilot Studio. What happens in a site of 500,000 documents? What happens when the site has 200+ page documents? And how we do ensure users don't create a million Copilots which overlap and confuse other users? Every business can gain from combining generative AI and LLMs with company data, and so far Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) has been the most common technical approach to this. From Chaos to Clarity: Mastering Enterprise Content Management

In a modern Intranet, we generally want to store content on the site where it should be managed. We think of this as distributed content management. It’s similar to the way News works in modern SharePoint. This usually means each department or organizational unit can (and should) manage their own content using a process which makes sense for them.

At the same time, we may want to roll up that content in one central location for ease of access. A Policy Center is a great example of this approach and one we find ourselves building for many of our clients. But this approach works for many types of content.

In this session, you’ll see how the following components add up to make a Policy Center:

* Information architecture (IA) in the form of Site Columns and a Content Type to represent a Policy
* A Site Template which only instantiates a Policy library in the site and applies the appropriate IA (Content Type, views, etc.)
* A Policy library in each department Intranet site where it will be used, deployed using the Site Template, with Policies specific to that department
* Changes to the search schema to support metadata filtering
* A Policy Center page built using PnP Modern Search Web Parts to display the Policies from across the Intranet

Teams Dev vs. Copilot Dev - What's the difference? 

Developers have long used SharePoint as a Document Management system and used the same APIs that SharePoint uses to display the information inside the UI to end users. It was not possible to make the content that applications use "invisible"  to end users. SharePoint Embedded has finally made it possible for developers.

With SharePoint Embedded, Microsoft has released API-only Document Management available for developers to integrate Document Management functionality into their applications without having to worry whether end users will "accidentally" access documents through the UI.

In this lecture, we will cover SharePoint Embedded in detail, show how it is configured, used through the API and administered, and show what the advantages are of using SharePoint Embedded for DMS solutions in relation to custom backend development.
